Dr Zubeida Jaffer was hosted by 27four in Johannesburg on 18 June for the first of two Gauteng launches of her book, Becoming Charlotte.
The event, held at WellthSpace in Norwood, was attended by a variety of guests — from activists and academics to thespians and bookworms.
Becoming Charlotte is an imaginative reflection on South Africa in the 1800s, sketched around the life of the country’s first black female university graduate — Charlotte Makgomo Mannya-Maxeke.
The book’s Johannesburg launch forms part of a series of events leading up to the 125th anniversary of Maxeke’s graduation.
